Strength of duplicate checking?

Postby Coletti » Mon Aug 08, 2011 7:45 am

Hello,

Im interested in purchasing this add-in but want to first understand how files are identified as duplicates. For, example: if I have FILE1 and FILE2 which both contain identical data ... but have different filenames, located in different folders, and have different file creation/modification dates then will the SDD add-in recognize these files as duplicates?

Hi Cole,

Yes, for your example scenario, the files will be marked as duplicate files by snoop-de-dupe.

Snoop-de-dupe does NOT consider the file name, file path, file attributes, or file creation/modification date to match duplicate files. Duplicate files are found purely by using a SHA-1 160-bit hash (on the file data) combined with the size of the file. If these two values match then files are marked as duplicates.

Thanks,
Jim
